Russian enzyme market: capacity exists, but stability does not

Rus sajtjpg

The high share of imports creates risks for the agricultural and food industries.

The Russian enzyme preparation market shows significant potential. According to expert reports, in 2023 the market volume reached 13,418 tons and was estimated at 11 billion rubles, with an average annual growth of 5.3%. Two market segments are indicated as dominant: enzymes for the dairy industry and enzymes for bakery. At the same time, feed enzymes for agriculture remain at risk.

The main producers of enzyme preparations in Russia are PO Sibbiopharm, OOO Agroferment, Endocrine Enzymes Plant, OOO SHAKO and OOO Grain Ingredient.

PO Sibbiopharm is the largest Russian manufacturer of feed enzymes. It specializes in feed additives for agriculture. However, some of its products are inferior to foreign analogues in terms of activity, which limits competitiveness.

Agroferment LLC was created in 2008 to implement the import substitution program. It currently produces about 1,000 tons of feed enzymes per year and cooperates with Moscow State University and the Institute of Biochemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This allows for the optimization of feed rations and the reduction of agricultural producers’ costs by 5–9%.

The Endocrine Enzyme Plant (EEP) is the largest Russian producer of natural rennet for cheese making. Its products are in demand in the meat and dairy industries.

OOO SHAKO also specializes in enzymes for cheesemaking from natural raw materials of animal origin. In addition to the Russian market, the company supplies products to pharmaceutical companies and dairy plants in the countries of the Customs Union.

OOO Grain Ingredient is the official distributor of the Dutch company DSM in Russia and the Eurasian Economic Community. At the same time, it localizes some of its bakery products (“import substitutes”). Its enzymes optimize grain milling and improve flour quality. However, it remains dependent on imported technologies.

Like many Russian enzyme producers, these companies display varying degrees of sustainability. ZEF and SHAKO, for example, control niche segments of the dairy industry with minimal competition. While Agroferment and Sibbiopharm are focused on the agricultural sector, with risks due to the import of strains (pure cultures of microorganisms).

Dependence on imports has become the main challenge for the entire industry. The share of foreign supplies, according to experts, reaches 94%, the main producers are exposed to sanctions risks. The situation with feed enzymes is especially critical, since producers use imported strains. And their Russian counterparts are often less active.

At the same time, the market retains its capacity, but its sustainability depends on overcoming raw material dependence. Investments in strain selection and production modernization are the way to reduce the import share. RF Government Resolution No. 300 of 11.03.2025 defines the introduction of subsidies for farmers. In particular, it stipulates a mechanism for subsidizing the costs of creating and modernizing production facilities that produce critically important enzyme preparations, as well as food and feed additives. This Resolution comes into force on January 1, 2027.
